Celebrating the Legacy of Mac Blundon at the Avalon Squash Club's Season Opener

The Avalon Squash Club recently hosted the highly anticipated Mac Blundon Memorial Squash Tournament - a heartfelt tribute to a remarkable player, coach, and friend. This tournament wasn’t just a competition; it was a celebration of the life and legacy of Malcolm (Mac) Blundon, whose dedication and love for squash left an indelible mark on our community.

Remembering Mac Blundon

Mac was more than just a player—he was a mentor, a motivator, and a source of camaraderie for all who had the privilege to know him. A true gentleman on and off the court, Mac was known for his optimism, generous spirit, and willingness to share his knowledge. Whether offering technical advice during league nights or stepping in as a referee at a moment’s notice, Mac embodied the essence of sportsmanship.

Who could forget his infamous lob to the back corner? A perfect shot—a testament to his skill and love for the game. This tournament was a fitting way to honour his memory and keep his legacy alive within the squash family.

A Weekend of Competition and Camaraderie

The tournament brought together 45 players, all eager to compete and pay tribute to Mac’s memory. Divisions were packed with close matches, and while the competition was fierce, the atmosphere remained one of mutual respect and camaraderie—qualities Mac exemplified throughout his life.

One of the weekend’s most inspiring moments came in the women’s Division 1 final, where Alexa Fleming, Mac’s granddaughter, showcased her resilience by overcoming a 0-2 deficit to claim victory in an exciting five-game match. Her performance earned her the championship and the coveted frozen ham!

Mac’s son, Chad Blundon, also competed in the tournament, continuing the family tradition. Chad battled his way to the men’s A consolation final, ultimately finishing as the runner-up. His participation was a poignant reminder of how Mac’s influence continues to inspire his family and the wider squash community.

Lastly, congratulations to Black Knight's own Jeremy Schwartz for an undefeated weekend that paved his way to winning the A Division, earning him a frozen turkey in the process.

Beyond the courts, players shared stories of Mac’s impact, with many describing him as a mentor who shaped their games and their lives. In addition to the on-court action, the tournament featured a charitable element, with donations collected in accordance with Mac’s family’s wishes. Demonstrating how our squash community continues to rally together in support of one another.

Mac’s Legacy Lives On

While this tournament marked the start of a new season, it also reminded us of the lasting bonds and shared values that make squash more than just a sport. Mac’s legacy of mentorship, generosity, and camaraderie will continue to inspire us both on and off the court.

Congratulations to all who competed, and a special thanks to everyone who contributed to making this tournament a meaningful tribute to Mac. As the season unfolds, let’s carry forward the lessons Mac taught us: to play with passion, share our knowledge, and always lift each other up.
